What Inspired this Painting?
A few verses an ancient physician penned quoting one of his contemporaries, a world renowned teacher.
The text reads as follows...
"Five sparrows sell for two coins of small value, do they not?
Yet not one of them is forgotten by God.
But even the hairs of your head are all numbered.
Have no fear; you are worth more than many sparrows."
At the time that this text was penned, one of the smallest birds known to that culture was the sparrow. In the eyes of humans, a sparrow held very little value. In fact, a person would spend two coins to purchase four sparrows at the market. The fifth sparrow was thrown in for free, as if it has no value at all.
The world renowned instructor stated that no sparrow was ever forgotten by God. And that God even knows how many hairs are on each of our heads.
What is the point?
That what humans value, or don't value, is not the same as what God values. The instructor reassured his listeners that each of us humans is valued much more than "many" sparrows. Since God takes notice of a single sparrow, how much more so he takes notice of each human.
